Tooth Aches
Clean the area thoroughly by rinsing the mouth with saltwater. Apply a cold compress if the face is swollen. Take acetaminophen for the pain. DO NOT place aspirin directly on the sore tooth or gum. If pain persists, come in as soon as possible.

Broken Braces
If the broken piece can be removed easily, take it out. If it can't, cover the sharp area with gauze or a piece of chewing gum. If a wire is stuck in the gums, DO NOT REMOVE IT. Come in to see the dentist immediately. Loose or broken pieces which are not painful do not require emergency attention, but should be repaired as soon as possible.

Broken Teeth
Rinse injured area with water and place a cold compress over the injured area. Save any fragments. Immediate dental attention is necessary.

Knocked Out Permanent Teeth
Handle tooth by the crown, not the root. Rinse it off, but DO NOT over clean the tooth. Try to reinsert it in its socket and hold in place by biting down on a piece of gauze or cloth. If tooth can't be reinserted, place it in a cup of milk or water and see the dentist IMMEDIATELY. Teeth can often be saved, but time is a critical factor.

Cold or Canker Sores
Over the counter medications like OraJel usually provide some relief. If sores persist after a few days, consult the dentist. Many oral deseases begin as sores.
